🚫 The Cancer-Linked Chemical Hiding in Your Bread (Yes, Even the "Healthy" Kind)

Let’s talk about something I wish I didn’t have to write—but I have to share. Because we check labels, swap out toxins, and do our best to protect our families… and sometimes, even that’s not enough.

There’s a chemical hiding in bread, pizza crusts, tortillas, and more. It’s called potassium bromate, and if you haven’t heard of it yet—it’s time.

🧪 What is Potassium Bromate?

Potassium bromate is an oxidizing agent added to flour to help bread rise higher and look fluffier. Sounds harmless enough, right?

Except… it’s been linked to cancer in animal studies. And despite global concern, it’s still allowed in the U.S. food supply.

Let that sink in:
šŸŒ BANNED in the UK, Canada, the EU, Brazil, and more.
šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø STILL LEGAL in America.
šŸ“¦ Found in over 200 food products, including some you’d never expect.

🧁 Where It’s Hiding

You won’t usually see ā€œpotassium bromateā€ right on the front of the label. Instead, it’s quietly listed in the ingredients of:

  • Store-bought buns and rolls

  • Flour tortillas

  • Pizza dough and frozen crusts

  • ā€œEnrichedā€ white and wheat breads

  • And even some bakery items that look homemade

Yup. Even foods that seem clean and simple might be sneaking it in.

šŸ‘€ But Isn’t the FDA Protecting Us?

Here’s the kicker:
The FDA hasn’t reviewed the safety of potassium bromate since 1973. Let that year sink in. NO updated review. NO ban. Just silence.

Thankfully, California passed a ban on potassium bromate in 2023 (šŸ‘šŸ¼ go, Cali!). And now, 18 more states are considering following suit.

But until that happens nationwide, it’s up to us to stay informed and take action.

šŸ›’ So What Can You Do?

This is where awareness becomes empowerment. šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

Before your next grocery trip, check if your favorite products contain potassium bromate. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has a powerful tool where you can search by brand or product:

šŸ‘‰ Search for products with potassium bromate here

Look out for:

  • ā€œPotassium bromateā€ on the label

  • Or more sneakily: ā€œenriched flourā€ without transparency

Whenever possible, opt for:

  • Organic baked goods

  • Brands that explicitly state "bromate-free"

  • Homemade recipes with clean, whole ingredients. I personally love HERO Breads

šŸ’¬ You’re Not Overreacting

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, angry, or just plain exhausted from all the label-reading and vigilance… I get it. But please know: You’re not crazy. You’re not being dramatic. You’re being a protector.

And when enough of us raise our voices, we create real change. We already are.

🌱 Let’s stay loud. Let’s stay loving. Let’s stay informed.

Together, we’re raising a generation that knows better and chooses better—one loaf of bread at a time.
