Rooted Resilience™ and Hope Abounds Cancer Network: Supporting the Cancer Journey Together
A cancer diagnosis can change life in an instant.
Suddenly, there are appointments, tests, treatment decisions, new terminology, fear, questions, and an overwhelming amount of information to process. Patients are trying to understand what comes next, while caregivers are often carrying their own fears and responsibilities as they support someone they love.
For more than a decade, I have had the privilege of serving as Educational Director for Hope Abounds Cancer Network, walking alongside individuals and families affected by cancer. Through those years, one thing has become incredibly clear to me:
The need for support does not begin and end with cancer treatment.
It starts at diagnosis. It continues through treatment and recovery. And for many people, it remains years after they hear the words remission or no evidence of disease. That understanding is also at the heart of Rooted Resilience™.
Today, through the partnership between Hope Abounds Cancer Network and Rooted Resilience™, we are able to bring together cancer support, education, whole-person wellness, meaningful connection, and in-person experiences to help patients and caregivers navigate not just cancer treatment, but the journey that surrounds it.
Supporting the Whole Person Through Cancer
Medical teams play an essential role in diagnosing and treating cancer. But, anyone who has experienced cancer personally or walked alongside someone who has knows that life outside of the treatment room can bring an entirely different set of questions.
What should I eat?
How can I nourish my body during treatment and recovery?
What can I do to support my energy?
How do I manage the stress and fear that come with a cancer diagnosis?
Are there changes I can make in my home and daily environment?
How do I begin rebuilding my health after treatment?
How do I move forward when cancer has changed so much about my life?
And caregivers have their own questions.
They are often trying to care for someone they love while balancing work, family responsibilities, appointments, exhaustion, uncertainty, and their own physical and emotional health. These are some of the reasons I created Rooted Resilience™.
Rooted Resilience™ is a whole-person educational and support program designed specifically for cancer patients and caregivers. It provides practical education around areas such as real-food nutrition, hydration, gentle movement, stress management, restorative practices, environmental wellness, genetics and nutrigenomics, caregiver support, and other aspects of everyday well-being.
The program is not intended to replace oncology care or medical treatment. Instead, it complements the care patients are already receiving by providing education and practical tools that can help them feel more informed and supported in the choices they make each day.
Where Rooted Resilience™ and Hope Abounds Cancer Network Come Together
My work with Hope Abounds Cancer Network has always been deeply meaningful to me. Serving as Educational Director for more than a decade has given me the opportunity to listen to patients, survivors, caregivers, and families at many different points in their journeys. Those conversations have helped shape my understanding of what people need beyond their medical care.
Rooted Resilience™ grew from that same desire to educate and support the whole person. Bringing Hope Abounds Cancer Network and Rooted Resilience™ together has allowed us to expand the ways we can serve the cancer community.
Hope Abounds Cancer Network brings years of experience in cancer advocacy, education, support, and connection. Rooted Resilience™ brings structured whole-person wellness education that patients and caregivers can continue using throughout their journey.
Together, we are able to meet people where they are, whether they have just received a diagnosis, are navigating active treatment, are caring for someone they love, are beginning recovery, or are many years into survivorship.
Because cancer support should not have an expiration date.
Bringing the Experience to Life Through Our Retreats
For more than a year, one of the most meaningful extensions of this partnership has been the retreats we have been offering together.
There is something incredibly powerful about bringing patients, survivors, and caregivers together in person. A retreat provides something that cannot always be replicated through a screen. It creates space.
Space to step away from appointments and responsibilities.
Space to learn.
Space to ask questions.
Space to focus on your own well-being and, perhaps most importantly, space to connect with people who understand parts of the cancer journey that can be difficult to explain to someone who has never experienced it.
Through our retreats, participants are able to experience many of the principles that are central to Rooted Resilience™ while surrounded by the support and community of Hope Abounds Cancer Network. Education is certainly part of these experiences, but connection is equally important.
Sometimes a meaningful moment comes from learning something new about nourishing the body or managing stress. Other times, it happens while sitting beside another survivor and realizing that you are not the only person still processing what happened.
For a caregiver, it may simply be having someone acknowledge that their health matters too.
These experiences continue to reinforce something I have witnessed throughout my years working in the cancer community: we were never meant to navigate difficult seasons alone.
Cancer Care Does Not End When Treatment Ends
One of the areas I am especially passionate about is what happens after active cancer treatment. There can be an assumption that when treatment ends, life simply returns to normal. For many survivors, that is not the reality. Finishing treatment can bring tremendous gratitude and relief, but it can also introduce an entirely new season.
There may be lingering effects from treatment. There may be changes in the body, energy, sleep, or daily routines. There can be uncertainty about nutrition and lifestyle choices. And for many survivors, there is the emotional challenge of learning to live with the possibility of recurrence while trying not to allow that fear to control the future.
The appointments may become less frequent, but the questions do not necessarily disappear.
This is why survivorship education is so important.
We should not only be asking:
How do we help someone get through cancer treatment?
We should also be asking:
How do we help this person live well afterward?
Rooted Resilience™ was created with that larger journey in mind. The education and tools within the program are not meant only for a particular stage of cancer. They can continue supporting individuals as they move through treatment, recovery, remission, survivorship, and beyond. The same is true for caregivers. Their own health and well-being matter, and their need for support does not automatically disappear when their loved one's treatment ends.
Education Can Become Part of the Foundation
After decades of working in healthcare and more than a decade serving the cancer community through Hope Abounds Cancer Network, I continue to believe deeply in the power of education.
There are parts of the cancer journey that none of us can control, but there are also opportunities to help people better understand their bodies, learn how to nourish themselves, care for their physical and emotional well-being, create healthier daily environments, and make informed choices in partnership with their healthcare teams.
We can encourage caregivers to care for themselves while they care for someone else.
We can create opportunities for patients and survivors to connect with people who understand.
And we can remind those who have completed treatment that pursuing wellness does not have to end simply because their oncology appointments become less frequent.
This is what I hope Rooted Resilience™ provides.
Not another overwhelming list of things someone "should" be doing, but a foundation of knowledge, practical tools, encouragement, and community that patients and caregivers can return to throughout their journey.
Rooted for What Comes Next
Cancer may become part of someone's story, but it does not have to define every chapter that follows.
Through the continued partnership between Hope Abounds Cancer Network and Rooted Resilience™, we are committed to walking alongside patients and caregivers from diagnosis, through treatment and recovery, into survivorship, and for the years beyond.
We will continue creating opportunities to learn together, gather together, ask questions, support one another, and remind patients and caregivers that their whole-person well-being matters.
Because people affected by cancer deserve more than information about how to get through treatment.
They deserve support as they learn how to live well through cancer and beyond.
And that is the heart behind Rooted Resilience™ and our partnership with Hope Abounds Cancer Network.
